Why Instagram ruins your photo quality.

Short answer: Instagram compresses every photo you upload and you cannot switch it off. It downscales anything wider than 1080 px, then re-encodes it as a JPEG at roughly 70–80% quality. What you control is how much work that compressor has to do: export at exactly 1080 px on the short edge, in sRGB JPEG at 85–95%, upload over Wi-Fi with high-quality uploads enabled, and avoid any app that re-compresses the file first.

Everyone has had this moment. The photo looks perfect in your camera roll. You post it. You open your own profile and it looks like a slightly worse photograph — softer, duller, with mush where the shadows were. Nothing changed except the upload.

This is not your camera, your phone or your eyes. It is a deliberate engineering decision, and understanding exactly what it does is the only way to work around it.

What does Instagram do to your photos on upload?

Instagram performs three transformations: it downscales anything wider than 1080 px, re-encodes the result as a JPEG at roughly 70–80% quality, and flattens wide-gamut colour into sRGB. A 1.6 MB photo can leave the pipeline at around 125 KB.

When you tap share, your image goes through three transformations before anyone sees it.

  1. Resize. Anything wider than 1080 pixels is scaled down to 1080. A 4,000-pixel photo from a modern phone loses roughly three quarters of its linear resolution here, and that detail is gone permanently.
  2. Re-encode. The result is compressed as a JPEG at approximately 70–80% quality. This is where fine grain, subtle gradients and micro-contrast quietly die — the technical name for the mush you see in night photos and skin tones.
  3. Colour flattening. Wide-gamut profiles like Adobe RGB or ProPhoto get squeezed into sRGB. If you exported in anything else, colours shift, usually toward duller.

Instagram does this because it serves billions of images a day and bandwidth is its largest cost. A 1.6 MB photo can leave the pipeline at around 125 KB. That is not a bug — it is the product working as designed.

Why do some photos look much worse than others?

Because they were compressed twice. Instagram's pass is unavoidable, but if an app already re-saved your photo beforehand, you take the hit twice — and the second pass is disproportionately destructive because it works on the artefacts left by the first.

Here is the part almost nobody accounts for, and it explains most of the difference between photos that survive and photos that don't.

One compression pass on a clean original is barely noticeable. Two passes on an already-degraded file is what people mean when they say Instagram ruined their photo.

Where the extra pass usually comes from:

  • Collage and editing apps that re-save on export. Even if you changed nothing visually, the app re-encoded the file.
  • Screenshotting instead of exporting. A screenshot is a fresh capture at screen resolution, of an image already compressed for display.
  • Sending photos to yourself via a messaging app. Most messengers compress aggressively by default.
  • Re-downloading your own post to repost it. Now you are compressing Instagram's compression.

The rule that follows is simple: every app between your camera and Instagram should touch the file as little as possible, ideally not at all.

How do you stop Instagram from ruining photo quality?

You cannot stop compression, only reduce how much work it has to do. Export at exactly 1080 px on the short edge, in sRGB JPEG at 85–95%, upload over Wi-Fi with high-quality uploads enabled, and cut every unnecessary app out of the chain.

1. Export at exactly 1080 pixels

This skips Instagram's downscale step entirely. Portrait 4:5 is 1080 × 1350, square is 1080 × 1080, landscape is 1080 × 566. Uploading a larger file does not give Instagram "more to work with" — it gives Instagram more to throw away.

2. Use sRGB

Instagram converts everything to sRGB regardless. Doing the conversion yourself, in an app that handles colour properly, produces a better result than letting a bulk pipeline do it.

3. Save as JPEG, not PNG

Instagram converts to JPEG internally. Uploading PNG means a lossless-to-lossy conversion run by a compressor optimised for file size. Starting from a well-made JPEG gives it less to change.

4. Turn on high quality uploads

See the next section — it is off by default for many people and it genuinely matters.

5. Upload over Wi-Fi

On a weak connection Instagram may choose a lower-quality version of your upload to get it through. This is invisible and irreversible.

6. Remove apps from the chain

The single biggest gain available to most people. If you are not editing a photo, nothing should re-save it between your camera roll and Instagram.

Where is the Instagram high quality upload setting?

It is under Settings and privacy → Data usage and media quality, worded as "Upload at highest quality" or similar. It reduces how aggressively Instagram compresses, but does not eliminate compression.

  1. Open your profile in Instagram and tap the menu icon.
  2. Go to Settings and privacy.
  3. Find Data usage and media quality.
  4. Enable the highest quality upload option. It is worded slightly differently across versions — "Upload at highest quality", "Highest quality" or similar.
  5. Turn off any data saver mode while you are there. When data saver is on, Instagram may compress harder even on Wi-Fi.

This setting reduces how aggressively Instagram compresses. It does not eliminate compression, and any source claiming otherwise is wrong.

Do bigger files or desktop uploads improve Instagram quality?

No to both. Compression happens server-side, so posting from desktop changes nothing, and uploading a 4K file guarantees a downscale before compression — strictly worse than uploading at 1080 px.

Does Instagram compress video more than photos?

Yes, considerably. Instagram transcodes every clip into its own H.264 or HEVC streams and caps the bitrate well below what a modern phone records. Export at 1080p, 30 fps, Rec.709 — never 4K, log or HDR.

HDR and log footage is a particular trap: it looks spectacular on your phone and flat or strangely dark once Instagram maps it into a colour space it supports.

A single post is one photo, one export, one compression pass you can control carefully. A dump is eight or ten photos, often from different sources — some from your camera, some saved from a friend, one a screenshot, one already sent through a messaging app. Each has its own compression history before Instagram touches it.

Then the format adds its own damage: because slide one sets the aspect ratio for every slide, mismatched photos get cropped, and a cropped image at 1080 px wide has less real detail in the part that survives.
