Does missing one day ruin a habit?
The best-known study on this suggests it doesn't. In a 2010 study of habit formation in everyday life, missing a single opportunity did not materially affect the habit's development.
That's Lally and colleagues in the European Journal of Social Psychology. It was a small study of 96 people, so it isn't the last word, but it supports what most of us feel. The damage often comes from how we react to the miss: the streak resets, the number that motivated us disappears, and we stop.
A sensible aim is to never miss twice in a row, and that's the rule some trackers now build in.
How do habit trackers handle a missed day?
Here's what each app offers according to its App Store page and release notes.

How do flexible and shielded streaks work in Solora?
You choose the rule when you set up a habit, because a daily medication and a daily walk shouldn't play by the same rules.
- Strict: a missed day breaks the streak. Good for habits where you really want no exceptions.
- Flexible: one missed day is forgiven. Two in a row breaks it, which is the "never miss twice" rule.
- Shielded: a day can be protected with a reason (sick day, travel, vacation, emergency, rest day, low energy or personal reason), within a small allowance so it stays honest.
You can also set an easier version of a habit for low-energy days, such as "10 minutes" instead of "45-minute workout". It can be logged in one tap from the Premium Light Mode widget, and the history shows you used it. There's more on this in what to do on a low-energy day.
Which one should you choose?
- Only want to track habits, on Apple Watch too, and pay once: Streaks.
- Want habits to log themselves from Apple Health or Strava: Habitify.
- Want simple long-term charts and a green and red record: Way of Life.
- Want habits in the same place as tasks and projects, with no account: Solora. It has 52 habit templates and four types (simple, count, timer, routine), and the free plan includes 20 habits. It has no Apple Watch app or Apple Health connection.
What can't Solora do?
Solora is a personal planner for one person on iPhone and iPad, and it has real gaps.
- No cloud sync between devices, no web app and no data export. Your data stays on the device and in its normal backup.
- No shared or team lists, and no Apple Watch app or native Mac app.
- The AI assistant needs iOS 26 and an Apple Intelligence device (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 or later, or an M1 iPad or later) with Apple Intelligence turned on. Everything else works without it.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a habit tracker that doesn't reset your streak?
Yes. Solora's flexible streak forgives one missed day, and shielded days keep a streak going for reasons like illness or travel. Streaks' release notes describe a 2-Day Rule, and Habitify and Way of Life let you skip days.
Does missing one day break a habit?
Research suggests not. A 2010 study by Lally and colleagues found that missing one opportunity didn't materially affect habit formation, though it was a small study. Avoiding two misses in a row is a practical rule.
What's a habit tracker that pauses when I travel or get sick?
Solora lets you shield a day with a reason such as travel, vacation or sick day, within a small allowance. Habitify lets you pause a habit when life changes, and Streaks' release notes mention paused tasks.
Is there a free habit tracker with no account?
Solora's free plan includes 20 habits with no account, and its App Store label is Data Not Collected.
