How to keep your habits and plans on track while traveling

My Instagram highlights run through Bali, Morocco, Portugal, France, Rome and more, so travel is a regular part of my year. Trips are hard on routines, but it doesn't have to be all or nothing.

Quick answer

Before you leave, shrink each habit to a travel-size version you could do in a hotel room in five minutes, and keep only one or two. Plan one thing per travel day rather than a full list. If you truly can't do a habit, mark it honestly as a travel day instead of breaking the chain or lying to yourself. Solora has this built in: shielded streaks with a Travel reason, easier versions of habits, a Plan a Trip template with a moodboard, and offline use with no account.

How do you keep habits going on a trip?

Don't try to bring your whole routine. Decide before you leave which one or two habits matter, and how small they can be.

Travel-size versions of common habits
At homeOn a trip
45-minute gym session10 minutes in the room, or just walking the city
Read 30 pagesRead one page before sleep
Daily journalOne line about the best thing today
Language lessonOrder one thing in the local language
Post three times a weekCapture only, and post when you're back

The goal of a travel habit isn't progress. It's keeping your identity as someone who does this, so that restarting at home is nothing dramatic.

How much should you plan on a travel day?

One thing. Travel days are full of decisions already, so choose one outcome and let the rest be the trip.

On a day with a flight, it might be "get to the hotel with everything". On a free day, it might be "see the old town before noon". Solora's Big 3 can hold 1, 3 or 5 items, and unfinished items carry over to the next day, which is exactly what you want when the ferry doesn't come.

Should you break your streak while traveling?

Only if you want to. If a streak keeps you going, protect it honestly rather than abandoning it or ticking a box you didn't earn.

In Solora, a shielded streak lets you mark a day with a reason such as Travel or Vacation, within a small allowance, so the chain survives and your history stays truthful. A flexible streak forgives one missed day, which is often enough for a long weekend. For longer trips, I'd simply take the break and restart when you're home. Missing days doesn't seem to undo a habit: see habit trackers that forgive missed days.

Bali. Pick something smaller than your home routine, because this view will win otherwise.

How can you plan the trip itself?

Keep it all in one project with steps, and let the dates take care of themselves. Solora's Plan a Trip template starts with the usual list.

  • Choose destination
  • Set a budget
  • Book flights
  • Book accommodation
  • Plan daily itinerary
  • Check passport & documents
  • Pack your bags

Every project also has a moodboard, where you can save images, notes, links and colors: restaurants, outfits, photo spots. Add a Traveler role if you're always somewhere new, and on supported devices the assistant can break a goal like "a week in Portugal" into timed steps.

It works without internet because there's no server, which matters at 30,000 feet or on a foreign SIM. The assistant also runs on the device on supported iPhones. Since 3.2, repeating tasks can take care of things like renewals with a reminder up to 7 days ahead, which is handy for a passport or travel insurance.

How do you restart after a trip?

Plan your return before you leave. Give yourself one easy day, with no big goals, then restart at the travel-size version and build back up.

The first week back is a good time for a 15-minute weekly review. If you come home flat, the low-energy day guide is for you. Solora won't handle bookings, shared itineraries or maps; it has no shared lists, so if you plan with a group, use a shared tool for the itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep my habits while traveling?

Choose one or two habits and shrink them to a version you can do anywhere in about five minutes. Plan one main thing per travel day, and restart at the small version when you get home.

What is a good habit tracker for people who travel?

Look for one with a rule for away days. Solora has a Travel reason for shielded streaks and works offline with no account. Habitify lets you pause habits, and Streaks' release notes mention paused tasks.

Is there a planner app that works offline?

Yes. Solora has no server, so planning works without internet, and the assistant also works offline on supported devices because it runs on the device.

Can I share a trip plan in Solora?

No. Solora has no shared lists or collaboration. It's good for your personal trip checklist and moodboard, but use a shared tool if you're planning with a group.
