Quick answer: To dump means to drop or get rid of something quickly and without care, like dumping a bag of sand or dumping your files into one folder. As a noun, a dump is a place for rubbish or, informally, a messy place. The same idea runs through every other use: being dumped is being ended with abruptly, a data dump is a big unsorted transfer of information, and a photo dump is a pile of photos posted together on Instagram. In the dumps is the one exception: it means sad, and it has a different origin.

What is the core meaning of dump?

Dump means to let go of something in a heap, without care or order. As a verb you dump a load; as a noun, a dump is where the load ends up.

Almost every use of the word keeps that picture: a lot of something, moved fast, with no sorting. Three everyday senses cover most sentences you will meet.

  • Verb, to unload: "They dumped the gravel by the gate."
  • Verb, to get rid of: "I dumped my old phone in a drawer." It often carries a slight judgment, as in dumping waste where it should not go.
  • Noun, a rubbish site or a messy place: "We took the old sofa to the dump." "This flat is a dump."

If you can swap the word for drop in a heap and the sentence still works, you have the right meaning.

What does dump mean in slang?

In casual English, dump usually means ending a relationship abruptly, offloading feelings onto someone, or (rudely) going to the toilet. Context makes it clear which one you are reading.

  • To dump someone: to break up with them. "She dumped him over text."
  • To dump on someone: to criticise them or give them work you do not want. "He dumped the whole report on me."
  • Trauma dump: to pour heavy personal stories onto someone who did not ask for them.
  • Brain dump: to write everything in your head onto a page, unsorted, so you can deal with it later.
  • To take a dump: vulgar slang for using the toilet. Fine among friends, not in an email.

What does dumped mean?

Dumped is the past tense of dump. Most often it means someone ended a romantic relationship with you, usually suddenly.

"I got dumped" is the common phrasing, and it stresses that the decision was not mutual. Outside dating, dumped keeps its plain meaning: "The truck dumped its load", "Investors dumped the stock" (sold a lot of it quickly), or "The company dumped the idea" (dropped it).

What does down in the dumps mean?

Down in the dumps means feeling sad or low for a while. It has nothing to do with rubbish: the plural "dumps" is an old word for a gloomy mood.

"She has been down in the dumps since the move" means she has been feeling low. The word was in print by the early 1500s, and dictionaries link it to Germanic words for dull or hazy (compare German dumpf), so it is usually treated as unrelated to the rubbish-heap sense of dump. It is a mild, everyday phrase, closer to "a bit blue" than to a medical description of depression.

What does dump mean on Instagram?

On Instagram, a dump is a photo dump: one carousel post with several casual photos and videos from real life, usually from a week, a month or a trip. The word "dump" signals that it is unpolished on purpose.

The joke is in the name. You are "dumping" your camera roll instead of curating one perfect shot. You will see it in captions as "october dump", "camera roll dump" or "life lately dump". Instagram allows up to 20 photos and videos in one post, and most dumps use 8 to 12.

A related term is a dump account (also called a finsta), a second, more private profile for the same kind of unfiltered posting. For the full story on the format, read what is a photo dump.

What does dump mean in tech?

In computing, a dump is a raw copy of stored data written out in one go, usually to inspect it or move it. The idea is the same: everything, unsorted.

  • Data dump: a large amount of data released or copied at once. It is also used for people, as in "the first lecture was a data dump".
  • Crash dump or core dump: a snapshot of a program's memory saved when it crashes, so developers can see what went wrong. A dump file is where that snapshot lives.
  • tcpdump: a command-line tool that prints the network traffic passing through a computer.
  • Database dump: an export of a whole database, often used as a backup.
  • UUP dump: a community site for downloading Windows update files directly.

What are dump trucks and dump cakes?

A dump truck tips its load out of the back. A dump cake is a dessert where you dump the ingredients straight into the pan, with no mixing bowl. Both names mean exactly what they say.

A pumpkin or pecan dump cake usually has fruit or filling on the bottom, dry cake mix on top and melted butter over it all. It is the most cheerful use of the word in English.
