How to write a good Instagram caption

Look at the photo and ask what it feels like. Then say that in as few words as you can.

• Lead with the line that matters. Instagram cuts longer captions off after the first line or so, with a "more" link, so the opening has to work alone.
• Add something the photo can't. A beach photo with the caption "beach" says nothing. A beach photo captioned "out of office, in the sea" has a voice.
• Match the post. A personal photo can take one word. A how-to or a story can run to a paragraph if it earns it.
• Sound like yourself. Change one word in any line above to something you would say.
• Choose your case on purpose. Lowercase reads relaxed; sentence case reads more polished.
• Keep hashtags few and at the end. They should not interrupt the line.
