iPhone Storage Full? What to Delete First
Quick answer
Open Settings › General › iPhone Storage and see what's actually biggest. Then work in this order: use a Recommendation if one fits, offload big apps you rarely open, delete long videos and screen recordings, remove downloaded videos and old message attachments, and finally empty Recently Deleted. Paying for more iCloud storage doesn't add space to your iPhone by itself.
The “Storage Almost Full” alert tends to arrive at a bad moment. Most people respond by deleting a few dozen photos, see the number barely change, and give up. It moves once you go after what's heavy, so find out what that is first. If you're only trying to install an update, the shorter 10-minute update rescue is the page you want.
What does “iPhone Storage Almost Full” mean?
The storage inside your iPhone is nearly used up. Apple says a low device already frees space by removing things you can download again or don't need, like unused apps and temporary files. Apple's advice for the alert itself: check the storage recommendations, or remove content such as videos and apps.
It's about the phone, not iCloud. Apple treats them as two separate things: device storage is the space inside your iPhone, iCloud storage is space on Apple's servers. If your alert names iCloud, you want the iCloud storage full guide instead.
What's taking up space on my iPhone?
The bar in iPhone Storage tells you. Go to Settings › General › iPhone Storage and let it load. The list underneath shows how much each app uses, and that list decides your plan: if Photos is 12 GB and one app is 40 GB, cleaning your camera roll is the slow route.
| Category | What's in it | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Apps | Installed apps and their content, files in “On My iPhone”, Safari downloads | Offload or delete apps; remove downloads inside them |
| Photos | Photos and videos in the Photos app | Delete long videos first, then empty Recently Deleted |
| Media | Music, videos, podcasts, ringtones, artwork, voice memos | Remove downloads you've already played |
| Messages | Messages and their attachments | Delete big attachments and old conversations |
| Emails and their attachments | Delete old mail with large attachments | |
| iCloud Drive | iCloud Drive files downloaded to this iPhone | Remove downloads you don't need offline |
| System Data / Other | Siri voices, fonts, dictionaries, logs and caches, Spotlight index, system data | Nothing directly. What it is and what helps |
| System (iOS) | The operating system | Nothing |

What should I delete first when my iPhone is full?
Go from big and replaceable to small and irreplaceable. Apps and downloads can come back with one tap; photos can't. That's why photos are near the end of this list, even though they're where most people start.
-
Check the Recommendations 1 min
On the iPhone Storage screen, tap Show All if you see it. Read each recommendation, then tap Enable to turn it on, or tap the recommendation to review what you could delete.
-
Offload big apps you rarely open 2 min
Tap an app in the list, then Offload App. Apple's wording: it “frees up storage used by the app, but keeps its documents and data”. Delete App also removes the app's data, so don't mix them up.
-
Delete long videos and screen recordings 4 min
In Photos, go to Collections › Media Types and open Videos, then Screen Recordings. Look for accidental recordings, clips you've already shared and long videos you'll never rewatch. A few of these can outweigh hundreds of photos.
-
Remove downloaded videos 2 min
Apple lists videos downloaded for offline viewing, in the TV app and other streaming apps, as a common source of storage use. Remove the ones you've already watched.
-
Delete large message attachments 2 min
In a conversation, tap the contact's name at the top, tap Photos (on iOS 18 or earlier, See All), then Edit and Select Photos, pick what to remove and tap Delete. If WhatsApp is high in your storage list, check the storage settings inside WhatsApp too.
-
Empty Recently Deleted 1 min
In Photos, go to Collections › Utilities › Recently Deleted, tap View Album, unlock, then Select and delete. Nothing removed here can be recovered, so look through it first. Until you do this, the photos and videos from step 3 still take up space.
The one-line version
Offload big unused apps → delete long videos → clear downloads and attachments → empty Recently Deleted. Check the bar again before you touch your old photos.
Why is my iPhone still full after deleting things?
Usually because deleted photos and videos are still in Recently Deleted. They stay there for 30 days unless you empty it. Two other common reasons:
- Optimize Storage is on. With iCloud Photos, your iPhone may keep space-saving versions rather than full originals, so each deleted photo gives back less than you'd expect.
- Photos weren't the problem. If the biggest rows in your list are apps or System Data, deleting photos won't move the number much. Go back to the bar.
Will buying iCloud storage fix a full iPhone?
Not by itself. iCloud+ adds space on Apple's servers, not inside your phone, and Apple says you don't need to buy more iCloud storage to make room for an update. It only helps your iPhone indirectly: with iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage, originals live in iCloud and your phone keeps smaller versions. Here's how that works, and how to avoid deleting photos everywhere by accident.
Do iPhone cleaner apps clear junk and cache?
No app can clear other apps' caches on an iPhone, mine included. Apple sandboxes all third-party apps, which is designed to stop them gathering or changing what other apps store. Apple also says your device removes cached and temporary files itself, “so you don't have to”.
What cleaner apps can really do is help you find and delete your own photos and videos faster, and some handle contacts or other data you give them access to. That can be genuinely useful. Just be skeptical of any promise to “clean junk files”.
Where does Solo.Swipe help?
It helps with one row of that bar: Photos. I make it, so weigh this accordingly.
- Largest 20 Videos shows your biggest videos first. It's a Pro feature that free users can unlock for the rest of the day by watching one short ad.
- Videos has free filters for 4K videos, long videos (over 5 minutes) and screen recordings.
- Swipe left to delete, right to keep, up to file into an album, and see how much space the session freed. Everything goes through a Final Review and the iOS prompt, then lands in Recently Deleted.
The free version allows 50 deletions a day, plus 20 for each optional ad. For a storage emergency that's rarely the limit: you need a dozen big videos gone, not a thousand photos.
Where Solo.Swipe doesn't help
It only works on your photo library. It can't offload apps, clear message attachments, shrink System Data or compress videos. For those, use the steps above.
How do I stop my iPhone filling up again?
Make space a little at a time. A few small settings and a short weekly habit beat a big rescue every few months.
- Once: turn on Settings › Apps › App Store › Offload Unused Apps, so iOS can remove apps you don't use while keeping their data.
- Once: set old messages to delete automatically, in Settings › Apps › Messages › Keep Messages.
- Weekly: review the week's videos and screen recordings, the fastest-growing part of most libraries.
- Monthly: empty Recently Deleted once you're sure.
- Before a major update: check iPhone Storage and back up.
Questions
Why does my iPhone say storage is full when I have iCloud?
Because they're separate. iCloud storage is space on Apple's servers; the alert is about the storage inside your iPhone. Having space in iCloud doesn't free space on the phone unless you use iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage, or remove the content from the iPhone.
How much free space should I keep on my iPhone?
Apple doesn't publish a number. A practical habit is to keep a few GB free, and more before a major iOS update, because installing needs working room as well as the download.
Does offloading an app delete my data?
No. Apple says offloading frees up the storage used by the app but keeps its documents and data. The icon stays, and tapping it reinstalls the app if it's still available on the App Store. Delete App is the option that removes the data too.
Will deleting photos from my iPhone delete them from iCloud?
If iCloud Photos is on, yes: Apple says photos you delete on one device are deleted everywhere you use iCloud Photos. Read how to free iPhone space and keep your photos before deleting in bulk.
What is System Data, and can I delete it?
It's things like Siri voices, fonts, logs, caches and the Spotlight index. There's no delete button, and Apple says you don't need to take any action. More on System Data.
