Quick answer: A photo collage (or picture collage) is a single image made by combining several photos, either in a tidy layout or overlapping like a scrapbook. The word comes from the French coller, "to glue", and collage became an art technique with Braque and Picasso in 1912. Today most collages are digital. The main types are the grid, freeform or scrapbook, shape collage and photomontage. A good one has a single focal photo, consistent spacing and fewer photos than you first think.

What does collage mean?

Collage means an image built by assembling separate pieces into one. The pieces can be photos, paper, fabric or anything else. In everyday use today, it usually means several photos combined into one picture.

The plural is collages, and it works as a verb too: "I collaged our holiday photos." It is pronounced kuh-LAHZH, with a soft ending like the word "garage" in many accents.

Where did collage come from?

Pasting images together is old, but collage became a recognised art technique in 1912, when the Cubists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso started gluing paper and everyday materials into their work.

Picasso's Still Life with Chair Caning of 1912 is often called the first Cubist collage, and Braque's Fruit Dish and Glass, from later that year, the first papier collé (pasted paper). Historians still discuss who did what first. Dada artists such as Hannah Höch then cut up photographs from magazines to make photomontage. In the 1980s, David Hockney built his "joiners" from dozens of Polaroids, which look a lot like a modern photo dump laid out on one page.

What changed is the effort. A collage used to take scissors, glue and a free afternoon; now it takes a phone and a couple of minutes.

What are the types of photo collage?

Most collages fall into one of six types. The grid is the most common; the others trade tidiness for personality.

TypeWhat it looks likeBest for
GridEqual or tidy cells, like 2×2 or 3×3Before-and-after, recaps, anything with many photos
HeroOne large photo with smaller ones around itWhen one image should clearly lead
Freeform or scrapbookOverlapping, rotated, often with torn paperTrips, birthdays, personal posts
Film strip or PolaroidPhotos inside photographic framesNostalgic, analog looks
ShapePhotos forming a heart, number or letterAnniversaries, milestone birthdays, gifts
PhotomontageCut-outs merged into one sceneArt, posters, surreal images

What makes a photo collage good?

Four things: one clear focal photo, a limited number of images, spacing that is consistent or deliberately absent, and colours that belong together.

One focal point. If every photo is the same size and equally busy, the eye has nowhere to land. Make one photo bigger or place it in the centre.

Fewer photos. Most collages are seen on a phone. Nine small photos can be hard to read at that size, so 3 to 6 is often better. If you have more, consider a carousel instead.

Consistent gaps. Choose edge-to-edge or an even border, and keep it the same everywhere. Uneven gaps look like a mistake.

Related colours. Editing all the photos lightly in the same way, or converting everything to black and white, can pull random shots together.

What is the difference between a collage, a grid, a carousel and a dump?

A collage is one image made of many photos. A grid is a tidy kind of collage. A carousel is many separate images in one swipeable post. A photo dump is a casual carousel.

You can also combine them: a carousel where each slide is a small collage gives you space for more photos without shrinking them too much.

How do you make a photo collage?

Choose 3 to 6 photos, set the output shape, pick a layout, place your strongest photo in the largest cell, then export at full quality. You can do this in any collage tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is a photo collage?

A single image made by combining several photos, either in a tidy layout such as a grid or overlapping like a scrapbook.

What does collage mean?

An image assembled from separate pieces. The word comes from the French verb coller, meaning to glue.

Who invented collage?

Pasting images together is older, but collage as a recognised art technique is usually traced to Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in 1912. Sources differ on who was first.

How many photos should a collage have?

3 to 6 is usually enough for something seen on a phone. Larger grids work better in print, where each photo can be bigger.

What is the difference between a collage and a montage?

A collage keeps its pieces visibly separate. A montage (or photomontage) merges cut-outs into a single scene, and the word can also mean a sequence of images in a video.

I like that a collage still works the way it did in 1912: you put two things side by side and they start to mean something. Show me yours.
