How to Find Blurry and Duplicate Photos on iPhone

iOS has a Duplicates album, and it's genuinely useful — but it only catches exact matches. The photos actually cluttering most libraries are the ones it doesn't touch: four near-identical retakes of the same view, a burst of twelve frames, and the out-of-focus shots nobody ever went back to delete.

This guide covers what the built-in tool finds, what it leaves behind, and how to work through the rest efficiently.

1. Start with the Duplicates album

Recent versions of iOS scan your library for duplicate photos and videos on their own. Open Photos › Albums and scroll down to the Utilities section — if duplicates were found, a Duplicates album appears there.

Each group offers a Merge option. Merging keeps the highest-quality version, combines the relevant metadata from the copies, and moves the rest to Recently Deleted. You can merge groups one at a time or select several and merge together.

Two practical notes. The album only appears if duplicates were actually detected, so an empty Utilities section means iOS didn't find any. And the scan runs in the background over time, typically when the phone is idle and charging — on a very large library it may not be complete the first time you look.

Merge is safer than deleting by hand

Merging preserves the best available version of a group rather than leaving you to judge which copy has the higher resolution or the intact metadata. Where the built-in album offers it, take it.

2. What iOS doesn't catch

The Duplicates album is looking for copies of the same image — the same photo saved twice, an item imported a second time, a picture you received and saved that you already had. It is not looking for photos that merely resemble each other.

Everything below the first row is manual work in the Photos app — which is where most of the clutter in a large library actually lives.

3. Finding near-identical retakes

Retakes are the single most common form of photo clutter: you take the same shot three or four times because you weren't sure the first one worked, then keep all of them forever.

The useful property of retakes is that they're adjacent in time. They were all taken within a few seconds of each other, so they sit next to each other in a chronological view. That makes them easy to spot if you browse the right way:

4. Culling burst sequences

Burst mode captures a long sequence of frames and keeps all of them. One two-second burst can be a dozen full-size photos, and a few dozen bursts add up to real storage.

In Photos, open a burst and use the option to select the frames you want to keep — the app then keeps your selections and clears the rest of the sequence. You'll usually keep one, occasionally two if the burst captured different moments.

5. Finding blurry photos

There is no built-in "show me blurry photos" album in the Photos app, so this is the category that most often gets left behind entirely. A few approaches:

Zoom rather than trusting thumbnails

A grid of small thumbnails hides blur almost completely — an out-of-focus photo can look perfectly fine at that size. If sharpness matters for a photo, open it full-screen and zoom in on the subject before deciding. This is slow, which is why it's worth reserving for photos you're actually considering keeping.

Check the obvious sources first

Blur clusters around predictable situations: photos taken while walking, low-light shots without a stable surface, pictures of moving children or animals, photos taken through a car window, and accidental pocket captures. Scanning those contexts finds most of them without reviewing everything.

Compare within a group

When you have four retakes of the same subject, you don't need an absolute judgement of sharpness — only a relative one. Pick the sharpest of the group and clear the rest. This handles the majority of blurry photos as a side effect of dealing with retakes.

Use an app that scores sharpness

Third-party photo cleaners can analyse images and surface the ones likely to be out of focus, which turns an unbounded scroll into a short review list. Detection is a judgement call rather than a certainty, so treat any such list as a shortlist to review rather than a set to delete unseen — a deliberately shallow-focus portrait can read as "blurry" to an algorithm.

6. Which copy to keep

When you're choosing between near-identical shots, a quick order of priorities:

  1. Sharpness of the subject. A sharp subject with an imperfect background beats a well-composed blurry one; blur can't be fixed later.
  2. Eyes open, expressions right. Especially with people — this is usually why the retakes exist in the first place.
  3. Original over edited copy, if you kept both and the edit was minor. If the edit is the version you care about, keep that one instead.
  4. Higher resolution, where the copies differ — for example an original versus a version that came back through a messaging app.
  5. Intact metadata. Photos received through other apps sometimes lose their original date and location, which matters if you rely on browsing by time or place.

And remember the safety net: anything you clear moves to Recently Deleted and can be restored for 30 days, so a wrong call is recoverable.

Does the iPhone find duplicate photos automatically?
