Why a breath and not a quick scroll?
Because a scroll isn’t a break; it’s more input. You come back to the edit with three new tabs open in your head. A one-minute breath is the rare pause that adds nothing: no messages, no opinions, no algorithm. It also has a built-in finish line, which a feed never does.
There’s some evidence behind making it a habit, too. In a 2023 Stanford trial, five minutes of breathing practice a day for a month improved mood more than the same time spent on mindfulness meditation. Five minutes is roughly one coffee’s worth of procrastination.
What’s the best breathing exercise before recording a video?
Box breathing, for about two minutes. It settles nerves without slowing you down, and the holds give your attention a job. Then start talking on a relaxed out-breath, not a held one. If you’re about to go live and your heart is still racing, switch to a long exhale for the final minute (4 in, 6 out). More on this in how to calm nerves before a presentation, which works just as well for a camera as for a room.
How do I make it automatic?
Attach it to something that already happens every day, then let the app remember for you.
- Routines: name it, pick the practice, the time, the days and the length, and switch on a quiet reminder (“Afternoon Reset” at 3pm on weekdays, for example).
- Daily and weekly minute goals, kept separate from your streak, so a busy day doesn’t feel like failure.
- Streak freezes cover the occasional missed day, and when you do slip, ATHA says “A new streak can begin today.”
- The Garden grows from a seed as your minutes add up: progress you can see, without a leaderboard.
- Insights from your own ratings, worked out on your device: once you’ve rated a handful of sessions, you may see lines like “You reported feeling better after 80% of your Box Breathing sessions.”
Can I use it during calls or while screen-sharing?
Yes, quietly. Start the session, switch to Eyes closed view, keep the phone beside you and follow the haptic taps (the screen stays on while a breath is guided). Or run it on your Apple Watch, where each phase is a tap on your wrist and the session keeps going with your wrist down; mark the practice as a favourite on your iPhone first so it appears on the Watch. Nothing shows on your screen share, and with Guided Voice, Ambient Sound and Full Guided Mode off and the completion sound set to No sound, the taps are all there is.
What else helps creators stay consistent?
Breathing handles the nerves and the transitions. The rest of the creator week is mostly logistics, and these come from the same independent developer, so take the recommendation with that in mind:
- DUMP turns a shoot into a photo dump or Instagram carousel and picks your best shots for you.
- Solo.Swipe makes the post-shoot camera-roll cleanup a five-minute daily swipe.
- Solora plans your week by the roles you play, with a built-in Creator role and a daily Big 3.
For the bigger picture, the developer hub has a guide to posting consistently as a creator (without living on your phone) and one on organizing your life when you don’t know where to start.
Common questions
What breathing exercise is best before recording a video or going live?
Box breathing for about two minutes: in 4, hold 4, out 4, hold 4. It steadies you without making you sleepy. If your heart is still racing at the last minute, switch to 4 in and 6 out.
How long should a break between deep-work blocks be?
Long enough to change state and short enough that you’ll actually take it. A one- to two-minute breathing reset is a realistic minimum; ATHA counts sessions from 60 seconds.
Can I use ATHA during calls or while screen-sharing?
Yes. Use Eyes-closed view with the phone beside you (the screen stays on while a breath is guided), or run the session on Apple Watch, where each phase is a tap on your wrist.
Does ATHA work offline?
Yes. ATHA makes no network requests at all, so every practice works without a connection, and your data stays on your device.
Is ATHA free?
Yes: no subscription, no in-app purchases, no ads and no account. Every feature is included.
