How to write your own photo dump caption

Start from the strongest photo, not the event. Ask what it feels like, then say that in as few words as you can.

  • One line. The photos do the talking; the caption only sets the tone.
  • Pick a frame. A month, a place, a feeling or a running joke gives a dump a reason to exist.
  • Don't describe each slide. "beach, then dinner, then the bus" is a list, not a caption.
  • Choose your case on purpose. Lowercase reads relaxed; sentence case reads more polished.
  • Hashtags go last. At the end or in the first comment, never in the middle of the line.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good caption for a photo dump?

A short line that sets the mood without describing the photos: a feeling, a month, a place or an inside joke. Most of the captions on this page are under eight words, which suits a dump.

How long should a photo dump caption be?

One line is usually enough. In a dump the photos carry the story, so a long caption competes with them. If there is more to say, put it in a comment or on a slide.

Should photo dump captions be lowercase?

It's a style choice, not a rule. Lowercase looks relaxed and suits most dumps; sentence case looks more considered. Pick one and keep it the same across your posts.

Can I use these captions for free?

Yes. Every caption on this page is original writing and free to copy, edit and post. No credit needed.

Should I use hashtags in a photo dump caption?

Only if you want to. Put them at the end of the caption or in the first comment, so the caption itself still reads as one clean line.
